Carol Moseley Braun becomes the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Senate.  November 3, 1992.
In this 1993 photograph from the Clinton Library, she is the honoree at the Bethune-Dubois Awards.  Braun can claim three other “firsts” as well:
She was the first African American Senator from the Democratic party
She was the first woman Senator from Illinois (the only one to date)
She was the first woman to defeat a seated Senate incumbant
Thanks to Megan Maxwell and Larry Medina for their responses.
