On March 28, 1979, a nuclear meltdown occurred at the Three Mile Island power plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Five days later, Jimmy Carter visited the damaged power plant.  As a trained nuclear engineer, the President had served as a senior officer in the Navy’s nuclear submarine program, and had worked on efforts to dismantle a damaged nuclear reactor in Canada.

Soon after, President Carter ordered a commission to investigate the accident at Three Mile Island.  Read the report- The Need for Change: The Legacy of TMI.
