The Normandy invasion began during the pre-dawn hours of June 6, 1944. Back in Washington, President Roosevelt and his advisors waited anxiously for early news about the operation.
At 8:00 AM, London time, General Eisenhower cabled a top secret preliminary progress report. He concluded:
“The enthusiasm, toughness, and obvious fitness of every single man were high and the light of battle was in their eyes.
I will keep you informed.”
