July 13, 1960. Presidential nominations are made at the Democratic Convention. LBJ is nominated by Sam Rayburn. JFK receives the Democratic presidential nomination on the first ballot, receiving 806 votes to LBJ’s 409.
After the session concludes, Speaker Rayburn calls LBJ and tells him not to accept the vice presidential nomination under any circumstances. LBJ then talks to John Connally, who is still at the convention hall, and says he does not believe the VP nomination will be offered to him. Connally responds that there are rumors at the convention hall that JFK will in fact offer it to LBJ.
