JFK receives the Democratic presidential nomination on the first ballot, receiving 806 votes to LBJ’s 409. After the session concludes, Speaker Rayburn calls LBJ and tells him not to accept the vice presidential nomination under any circumstances. LBJ then talks to John Connally, who is still at the convention hall, and says he does not believe the VP nomination will be offered to him.
