Presidential Succession
Have you ever wondered what happens in the Oval Office when the President of the United States goes under anesthesia for a routine operation…or comes down with a debilitating illness…or otherwise becomes temporarily or permanently incapable of fulfilling his duties as President? Or why the President gets to choose a replacement when his Vice President has to leave office? Or why that episode of the West Wing where John Goodman became President for two days was titled “Twenty-Five”?
We now present you with all you ever wanted to know about Presidential Succession, courtesy of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution:
The 25th Amendment to the Constitution was passed by Congress July 6, 1965 and ratified February 10, 1967. The Amendment outlined what happens when the President becomes unable to perform the duties of the office, as well as establishing the process of succession to the Vice Presidency.
