JFK meets the first Peace Corps volunteers

On August 28, 1961, President Kennedy welcomed the inaugural group of Peace Corps volunteers at the White House.  The first countries to participate in the program were Tanganyika and Ghana.  At the ceremony, JFK and R. Sargent Shriver, director of the Peace Corps, bid the volunteers a personal farewell before their departure to Africa.
