On November 8, 2006, President George W. Bush announced the resignation of Secretary Donald  Rumsfeld, and his nomination of Dr. Robert M. Gates as his successor. 
Today marks the retirement of Secretary Gates.  During an Armed Forces Farewell Tribute at the Pentagon, President Obama presented Gates with the highest civilian honor, The Presidential Medal of Freedom.
